Burnouts

Programmer burnout is a very real thing. It’s what happens when you work too hard, for too long, without taking a break. And it can lead to some pretty serious consequences, including health problems, decreased productivity, and even depression.

So how can you avoid programmer burnout? Here are a few tips:

  1. Take regular breaks. It’s important to take a break every once in a while, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Get up and walk around, or take a quick nap. This will help refresh your mind and make you more productive when you return to your work.
  2. Set realistic goals. Don’t try to do too much at once. Set realistic goals for yourself and try to accomplish them one at a time. This will help reduce stress and prevent burnout.
  3. Take care of yourself. Make sure you’re getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and exercising regularly. These things will help keep you healthy and energized, which will in turn help prevent burnout.
  4. Time tracking can help keep you disciplined and organized, preventing burnout in the process.

New Office!

We’ve moved to a new office. We’ve grown a lot these past months and we definitely needed more room in which to work and play. The move is key to us as it will allow us to provide the best Magento workshops and an ergonomic work environment.

Not only this, but our clients will have a nice place to come to if they want to discuss their projects with us.

Company Values

A lot of companies define what is meant by the word ‘professional’, but we think we’ve found a way to visualize and explain it. Every single employee at our company has a professional development goal. For example, we want them to learn about another programming language, technology besides Magento, or area of expertise. To reach these goals, we provide training sessions and online courses. We also run internal startup idea competitions and employee-led workshops to encourage knowledge sharing and knowledge creation.

Freedom for employees.

We feel that the trust and freedom we give our staff members, empower them to exceed expectations and provide excellent service to our customers. At Developers Alliance, we consider every employee as an integral part of the team. We value the support, trust, and cooperation that our team members offer to each other. We believe our success is due to their efforts and we aim to recognize and reward their efforts throughout their career.

Mayo experiment on ergonomic workplace.

By Anita R. Gray

We did another research to improve our office environment and I am happy to share it here on our blog.

The initial extensive research conducted at the Hawthorne Works factory from 1924 to 1932 by Elton Mayo failed to determine the effects of lighting on the increase in a worker’s productivity (Mayo, 1999). Later in 1958, the results of the experiments were revisited by Henry A. Landsberger and the term ‘Hawthorne effect’ was defined to describe the change occurring in an individual’s behaviour when being observed (Sujatha et al., 2019).

Organizational Theory and Behaviour

by Anita R. Grey

We did a research about motivation in our company and here is a small summary.

Organizational Theory and Behaviour: Four Theoretical Contributions

The historical context has forced the four theoretical contributions which are central to the understanding of today’s organizations to emerge during the times of Industrial Revolution when a great number of people had to work together under a certain set of rules to archive and a common objective.

I. Scientific Management, 1909. Frederick Winslow Taylor, an American mechanical engineer.

Main idea: simplification and optimization of work processes with scientifically calculated solutions  (the best way to do any type of workplace task (Baumgart & Neuhauser, 2009)) offered to a manager to reduce production time and increase productivity in workers (efficiency).

Principles: 1. determine the most efficient way to perform a task using scientific method ( Payne et al., 2006); 2. capability and motivation based job assigning; 3. performance monitoring & supervision; 4. manager-worker work time.

Innovation: first time work processes were studied scientifically – “time and motion” studies (Krenn, 2011); workers and managers cooperation.

Motivation: Money.

Criticised for: common sense and judgement of workers/managers is disregarded (Lægaard & Bindslev,  2006) and reduces workers’ creativity.

Will VR have impact on ecommerce?

We’re taking a fresh look at what commerce will look like in five years and how we can apply new technologies to create innovative solutions for fashion stores.

We want to hear from fashion store owners and builders with experience in fashion ecommerce and fashion content creation about the possibilities and opportunities of using virtual reality to engage customers and promote their stores and content.

We are testing VR solutions for Ecommerce. What makes this project special? The goal of our exploration is to prove that virtual reality is not only a gaming platform but also the future of Ecommerce.

What is our aim? Our goal is to take the best practices from the ecommerce industry and adapt them for the Virtual Reality Ecommerce.

What are the challenges?

VR has never been used for ecommerce, so it’s all about experimenting what works and what doesn’t. Ecommerce is really complicated, it has lots of details to tackle each for VR.

What are we doing? We are working hard on creating a Virtual Reality Shop together with a Fashion Designer Mo.E.Concept for an Fashion ecommerce website. We create the user interface, product setup, integrate payment gateways and launch the whole test shop live in one year.
